Hemingway, on the other hand, only reported the war in Spain for the North American Newspaper Alliance (NANA) - at no stage in his life did he ever engage in military combat. The closest he got to fighting was as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in northern Italy during WW1. He reached the front in June 1918 and was wounded in early July. This didn't stop him however from constructing a highly inflated public persona out of this short-lived grazing encounter with war.
